Becoming a Member

QUMS rehearses at the University of Queensland (UQ), St Lucia Campus, every Wednesday night from 7 to 9.30 PM with a tea break in the middle. QUMS is open to all members of the public regardless of age or musical ability, with no audition requirement.

Our usual rehearsal venue for most of Semester 1 2022 is in the Parnell Lecture Theatre (Building 07, Room 234).

Please note that, in addition to the membership fee, a refundable $20 music bond is required from all members prior to music being loaned out.

If you would like to join us or are just curious to see what we're about, come along to a rehearsal or two and sit in before being required to register or pay fees.

As well as the normal rehearsals, we sometimes have separate sectional rehearsals, where each section can concentrate on their own part. These sectionals usually go for an hour or two depending on people's availability and the complexity of the pieces. Section Leaders organise these rehearsals in consultation with the members of their section.

QUMS also holds day camps or weekend rehearsal camps from time to time. Day camps are full-day intensive rehearsals, usually held on campus on a Saturday. Weekend rehearsal camps occur over a whole weekend and are held at an out-of-town campsite. As well as providing an opportunity to intensely workshop and polish repertoire ahead of performances, these occasions are also a lot of fun, with time allowed for relaxation and socialising, as well as activities such as the Camp Revue!

We are not all work and no play, however; we maintain a busy social calendar throughout the year. Social events range from weekly coffee after rehearsal, to barbeques on campus, to the end of year formal Academic Dinner. There is always something planned and the social events are a great way to get to know one's fellow choristers better.
